$5M Kosciusko Bridge-Crash Lawsuit

Posted on April 8th, 2010 No Comments

A motorist filed a lawsuit against New York City for $5 million in Brooklyn Supreme Court Monday.

According to court documents, Dennis Aryan crashed his car on the Brooklyn side of the Kosciusko Bridge beacuse, he claims, of “defective and hazardous condition[s].” Governor Paterson has promised to rebuild the Kosciusko bridge along with twenty-five other bridges throughout the state by tapping into the private sector, but this plan has seemingly been put on hold.

While the city is responsible for basic maintenance of the roads, rebuilding the bridges is the job of the state legislature. According to an official with the state Department of Transportation, budget concerns have delayed the $1 billion Kosciusko project.

City officials declined to comment on the lawsuit, and Aryan could not be reached for comment.

Police have released the name of a man who died in a fiery car crash in Corning, New York over the weekend.

According to statement issued by officials with the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, dental records identify 44 year-old Robert Wood of Savona as the driver who was killed Saturday afternoon. Officials with the New York State Troopers say deputies responded to a call of a family dispute in South Corning Saturday. When troopers arrived on the scene, Wood refused to comply with police orders and drove away in his vehicle, police say.

After a short pursuit, Wood apparently lost control of his vehicle, veered off the roadway and struck a large tree head-on, near Park Avenue. Wood’s vehicle bust into flames upon impact.

According to reports released by the Monroe County Medical Examiners Office, Wood died of blunt force trauma. The office says the fire did not contribute to Wood’s death.

Wood was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
