A subway contractor was killed this morning in a tragic construction accident.
The man was working with MTA at a section in Midwood of Brooklyn near the Avenue M street station when a load of metal sheets fell on him, crushing him to death. Witnesses say he was loosening the strap around a load of metal sheets when they shifted and slid until they fell on top of him.
Emergency workers hurried to the scene and tried to rescue him but he was declared dead at the scene.
Out sincerest sympathies go out to the family and friends of the subway contractor.

The man who is believed to have caused one of the country’s deadliest construction accidents in March of 2008 is set to go to trial June 21st. Two years ago, a 200-foot-tall crane rig snapped and fell onto a crowded city block in New York, killing seven people and injuring two dozen more. The rigging contractor who is said to be responsible for this tragedy, William Rapetti, could be charged with manslaughter. Prosecutors insist that the contractor did a substandard job of securing the rig while it was being pulled upward. However, Rapetti’s attorney argues that he followed standard industry procedures, and that other factors could have caused the crane to fall.
The crane was erected to assist in building a nearby condominium on East 51st Street. Although some residents had expressed concern that the crane was swaying and appeared unstable, the crane passed multiple inspections, even one as late as March 14, 2008.
