NY participates in nationwide drunk driving prevention campaign

Posted on August 25th, 2010 No Comments

Thousands of people are injured in car accidents each year as a result of careless driving of others. If you have been injured due to someone’s speeding, driving under the influence etc in NY, you probably will need a legal assistance of an accident lawyer in Brooklyn.

“Over the Limit – Under Arrest” is a nationwide 18-day campaign to prevent drunk driving starting on August 20th and continuing through Labor Day, September 6th.  New York and many other states are participating in the campaign which requires everyone convicted of a misdemeanor or felony drunk driving charge to install an ignition interlock device in their vehicle at their own expense.  The campaign includes first-time offenders.

John F. Sullivan, president of the New York state STOP-DWI Association, Inc., said, “Highly visible enforcement efforts are an effective deterrent and a reminder that DWI is a priority among New York police agencies.  Our goal is to make the Labor Day holiday period a safe and enjoyable one for all New Yorkers”.

Dangers of driving with dogs

Posted on August 19th, 2010 No Comments

Getting into a motor accident can lead to numerous unwanted consequences, including severe injuries, lost wages, costly medical treatment or even death. Our auto accident lawyers in Brooklyn would like to explain and warn you of the main causes of car accidents, which include speeding, DUI, driver’s recklessness, night driving, car design defects to name a few. Read further to learn more about distracted driving as one of the main causes of getting into a car accident.

The auto club, AAA, recently released the results of a survey they completed on driving with dogs in the car.  According to the survey, 60 percent of dog owners have driven with their dog in the car.  Also, only 17 percent of those who have driven with their dog in the car say they have used animal restraints.  Furthermore, 21 percent of dog owners admitted to driving with their dog in their lap.

59 percent of participants admitted to performing distracting behavior with their dog in the car, including, petting, giving the dog food or water, and playing with their dog.  AAA warns that driving with a dog in the car can be as distracting and dangerous as texting while driving.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says that if you need to drive with your dog in the car, always keep the dog in the back seat and use animal restraints.  Animal safety restraints are available in most pet stores.  Unrestrained pets in the front seat or in a driver’s lap not only endangers the driver, the animal, and passengers, but other drivers on the road.

All marked NYPD police vehicles will soon be outfitted with LED message board displays just under the car’s police lights.  LED message boards use blue light to display a streaming message which can be easily read from a distance.

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly stated that the message boards will have a standard 50 messages related to general accident or traffic issues that can be controlled from the car.  In the future, they hope to be able to control messages from a central command center, as well as be able to expand the types of messages to include things like missing child descriptions.

So far, ten vehicles have had the LED message boards installed in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.

Two Brooklyn police officers are suspended without pay after injuring a bicyclist while they were driving on the wrong side of a road on Monday.  The two officers are also in trouble for leaving the injured cyclist without filling out a report.  At least part of the incident was captured on a surveillance camera.  Authorities said that the officers should have remained at the scene after colliding with the cyclist.  They also should have informed a supervisor and filed a report of the accident.  Instead, the officers only helped the cyclist to the sidewalk and provided him with tissues to wipe the blood from his cuts and abrasions before driving off.

The two officers said that they believed the man fell off his bike when the police car’s sirens startled him.  However, authorities said that the cyclist was struck by the patrol car.  The two police officers will have to stand a departmental trial.

Bicyclist Killed in Brooklyn Car Crash

Posted on April 22nd, 2010 No Comments

An unlicensed driver struck and killed an 18 year-old bike rider in Brooklyn, Wednesday.

According to officials with the New York City Police Department, 28 year-old Michael Oxley, of Brooklyn, has been charged with criminally negligent homicide. Police say Oxley ran a red light and crashed into a bicyclist, dragging him over fifty yards. Witnesses report that the cyclist, Jake McDonaugh, was traveling east on Beverly Road shortly after 9:30 a.m. when he entered the intersection of Flatbush Avenue as Oxley sped through the red light.

“He got stuck under the van, and the van [dragged] him about half a block against the asphalt,” witness Brian Lorde said. “It was awful. He never had a chance.”

McDonaugh was pronounced dead at the scene. A friend wrote of McDonaugh saying he was “one of the most, if not the most, unique, talented and dedicated people I have ever known, and genuinely by no means an exaggeration of his character… I had the pleasure of working on several screen-printing jobs with Jake, in which he stood out to me even more so as an amazingly talented artist. He earned an honest living selling his art on the streets of SoHo and undeniably left an impact under the pseudonym, ‘Drip.’”
