All marked NYPD police vehicles will soon be outfitted with LED message board displays just under the car’s police lights. LED message boards use blue light to display a streaming message which can be easily read from a distance.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly stated that the message boards will have a standard 50 messages related to general accident or traffic issues that can be controlled from the car. In the future, they hope to be able to control messages from a central command center, as well as be able to expand the types of messages to include things like missing child descriptions.
So far, ten vehicles have had the LED message boards installed in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.

A 21-year-old Bronx man appeared in court this week to plead not guilty to driving drunk in connection with a hit-and-run last Friday.
Police report the accident occurred on Route 120 following a tune-up soccer game between Ecuador and Mexico in the new Meadowlands Stadium in New Jersey.
As 77,000 fans left the stadium, a group of nine, including a 20-month-old child, crossed Route 120. The 21-year-old driver struck them on the road and then fled the scene.
Police caught up to him in Wallington and charged him with assault by auto, leaving the scene of a dangerous accident, and driving under the influence.
Luckily none of the pedestrians were seriously injured.

A pedestrian was struck and killed in a Brooklyn car accident Sunday.
According to officials with the New York City Police Department, the unidentified pedestrian was struck by a Lincoln Town Car at the intersection of Fort Hamilton Parkway and 39th Street in Borough Park shortly before midnight Sunday. Police say 50 year-old Remigir Cajamarca, who works in a nearby bodega, called 911.
“Oh, my God! Call 911! Someone got hit!” a woman reportedly yelled to Cajamarca. “The man was just lying in the middle of the road,” said Cajamarca. “He wasn’t moving.”
Paramedics transported the victim to Maimonides Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
